‘The Crater’ as it is affectionately known, has been described as a microcosm of Africa and it deservedly takes its place amongst those natural scenic wonders that you ‘have to see before you die’!
Situated in the volcanic highlands to the west of the great rift valley in northern Tanzania, it is not actually a crater at all but is more accurately referred to as a caldera and is the largest such unflooded caldera in the world.
Steep walls rise to 1800 ft above the floor, and while the rim is at an altitude of over 7000 ft and often cold and shrouded in mist, the floor is covered in verdant grasslands, forests with majestic yellow acacia trees, marshlands, natural springs and a large saline lake holding centre stage with its population of lesser flamingoes!
The numbers of animals that live inside the crater is truly astounding given that the surface area is no more than 80 000 acres, but it is their accessibility that makes this one of the best areas in Africa to view game and have a ‘WOW-experience!
Home to one of Africa’s highest concentrations of lion, a population of over 400 spotted hyena and one of the only places in east Africa with a population of black rhino, it is quite possible to see literally everything in a single day down on the crater floor……
and the views from your lodge or camp situated on the crater rim will simply take your breathe away!!
